Housing Method of the Mising Tribe: An Analytical Study

Abstract

Tradition and culture has always been deep rooted in reflecting the identity of a community. The North East of India is a hub to many different tribes. Each tribe is known for their different and unique tradition and culture. The Mising’s which are the second largest indigenous tribe of Assam, first being the Bodo’s are found in various districts of North Assam. The community is well known for maintaining their tradition and culture. The housing method is one amongst the many characteristics that makes the community remarkable. They built their houses on top of a raised platform supported by bamboo stilts. It is popularly known as Chang Ghar or Chang Ukum amongst the people. The housing method is associated with many traditional beliefs and practices. As the community is mainly found to reside in the banks of the Brahmaputra Valley, the construction process of the houses has helped a lot to the community during flood times. The housing style of the community has also been a centre of attraction to the tourist now a days.
