Abstract

The sustainability and efficiency of agricultural food source has become challenging due to the rapid urbanization and the reduction of farming land. This increasing demand has led to an alternative smart farming development with the recent fast developments in Internet-of-Thing (IoT) and web application technology. Hydroponics smart farming comes with the advantage of facilitating the requirements for sustainable and efficient food sources due to the ease of indoor implementation of the automated system and a low-stress environment for the plants to deliver high yields in a comparatively short time. Automated hydroponics farming along with the modern IoT and web application technology, is able to automate and optimize the growing process of the plants, in order to obtain higher yields and therefore produce healthy food with less farming land and labor cost. The automated system consists of capturing the sensors’ data such as pH, temperature, total dissolved solids, and water level, to be monitored through a website and assure all parameters fall within the requirement for particular plants. From these data, the automated control system makes sure an appropriate pH and EC solvents will be provided to the plants. Furthermore, the water flow and irrigation of the growing medium are auto-scheduled by a web-controlled scheduler. In addition, the web control can be set to manual mode where the automated control is allowed to be interrupted with manual control in case of specific conditions. The prototype of the system is successfully implemented and proven with cycles of grown plants.
