A Semiotic Study of Indian Saree: In Reference to Lower Income Class Women

Abstract
This research focuses on the semiotics of Indian Sari, an important component of the
Indian1fashion system, with a focus on lower income class womens wear. There is scope for
in depth study of the Indian fashion system, and this research would make accessible not only
the record of changing sari fashions, but also the meaning, symbolism, latent meaning, and
evolution of the sari. It would also disclose the elements that influenced evolution. The main
aim of this study is to analyze semiotic significance of the Indian sari in relation to the
changing status of lower income group women in society. The research concluded that the
low-income women, according to saree sourcing patterns; they like to shop in local shops and
markets, and most of the women claimed that they do not shop from exhibitions or malls. For
the low income group, buying online or by TV is not extremely popular. Whereas due to the
increasing popularity of the internet and the convenience of shopping, the middle and upper
classes now buy both "brick and click" sarees.
