Abstract

Reading is a process of research, comprehension and interpretation of meaning where the analysers of sight, discourse, movement and hearing interact connecting thus all the cerebral structures [4]. With the coming of the web the reading techniques, modalities and habits have changed their course and the modality of how it is consumed. However, it is a fact that reading is a necessary prerequisite influencing long-term life quality [6]. The aim of the present research is to give an insight into the situation linked to young people’s reading habits in the post Covid period. To reach the mentioned objective, the research included a sample of 359 pupils of the first, second and third grade of Italian language secondary schools belonging to the bilingual territory of the region of Istria and the Kvarner Bay in Croatia. The research about reading habits included questions linked to what they read (obligatory and leisure reading), how much they read and in which language they read. The analysed data were discussed in consideration of four essential variables: gender, schools/city, age/grade, field of study. The hypotheses, in line with the theoretical ground according to which the pupils’ interest for reading should have a strong correlation with the success achieved in life [6] [8], emerged as disappointing and therefore not fully confirmed.
