Abstract

Bicycle is a very common transportation tool for exercise or commute in our daily life. However, traffic accidents related to bicycle riding happen quite frequently in the road today. In order to ensure the safety of cyclists, an APP Piconet -based radar system for blind spot detection is proposed to protect cyclists from unexpected collision. It is established by a Piconet that is consisted of three subsystems, including a master and two slaves. The first Bluetooth microcontroller works as a master in the rear radar subsystem. Another two Bluetooth microcontrollers work as a slave located in the front radar subsystem and APP, respectively. When the radar detects an approaching object in either front or back side, a detected signal can be instantly transmitted to the APP for warning via Bluetooth, thereby avoiding potential risk in traffic. Experimental results confirm that the proposed system can efficiently monitor any approaching objects ranging 3-meter distance with 60-degree horizontal region and 5-meter distance with 120-degree horizontal region in the front and back areas, respectively.
