Abstract
The growing adoption of sustainable practices in academic institutions underscores the importance of integrating renewable energy sources with electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. Solar-powered EV charging stations represent a critical step toward achieving green campus goals, fostering energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints. However, this initiative is accompanied by several challenges spanning technical, economic, and regulatory domains. Technical challenges include the intermittent nature of solar energy, which requires efficient energy storage systems and advanced grid integration techniques to ensure reliable operation. Additionally, the design and scalability of EV charging infrastructure must align with dynamic campus energy demands while minimizing disruptions to existing systems. Economic challenges involve securing substantial upfront investments, navigating uncertain payback periods, and identifying cost-effective solutions for long-term operations. Meanwhile, regulatory challenges arise from navigating compliance requirements, obtaining necessary permits, and addressing grid compatibility issues. In response to these obstacles, green campuses are adopting innovative approaches. Smart grid technologies and adaptive load management systems are deployed to optimize energy distribution and mitigate solar variability. Economically, public-private partnerships, grants, and incentive programs are employed to reduce financial burdens and enhance project feasibility. On the regulatory front, collaboration with policymakers and aligning infrastructure with local and national sustainability objectives have proven effective. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced and the solutions implemented in deploying solar-powered EV charging infrastructure. It emphasizes the importance of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and technological innovation in overcoming barriers. By learning from best practices and addressing existing gaps, academic institutions can pioneer sustainable energy solutions, contributing to cleaner energy ecosystems and fostering environmental stewardship within their communities.
