Abstract

Is Financial Empowerment a means of reducing Domestic Violence? was an experimental
research aimed at finding the relationship between the variables, financial empowerment and
severity of domestic violence among the rural women at Mappedu, Chengalpet District of
Tamilnadu. This study was undertaken among the beneficiaries of Family Life Institute, an
outreach unit of Madras Christian College in collaboration with the Staff Wives and Women
Staff Association of Madras Christian College. The reason for undertaking this research was
the increase in the number of domestic violence cases reported to the Social worker at FLI,
MCC. The Empowerment model is the successful model in making intervention with the
victims of domestic violence. Empowerment brings change at the level of individuals and in
the systems of society.
