Spiritual Upliftment Through Indian Classical Music: An Analysis of Gita Mehta’s A River Sutra

Abstract
Indian classical music was meant not only for recreation, pleasure and worship but also for spiritual growth. Among all the art forms, music is closest to human emotions. It touches the heart and leads human beings to spiritual path as well as to self-realization i.e. the ultimate goal of life. In two stories of A River Sutra – ‘The Teacher’s Story’ and ‘The Musician’s Story’ – Gita Mehta has described in details the spiritual powers of Indian music. The current research paper is an effort to explore the mystical powers of music as described in the above mentioned stories and analyzing its validity and relevance in the current context.
